Webservers

Apache

The Apache HTTP Server Project is an effort to develop and maintain an open-source HTTP server for modern operating systems including UNIX and Windows NT. The goal of this project is to provide a secure, efficient and extensible server that provides HTTP services in sync with the current HTTP standards.

Mod_backhand

mod_backhand is a project that allows seamless redirection of HTTP requests from one web server to another. This redirection can be used to target machines with under-utilised resources, thus providing fine-grained, per-request load balancing of web requests.  Mod_backhand is a drop-in module for the Apache Web Server and provides a turnkey solution for intra-cluster redirection of HTTP on a per-request basis. The redirection is based on various system resources available within the cluster. This service is provided seamlessly, preserving remote host information for access/authentication purposes. As with the methodology of Apache, the redirection mechanism can be enabled or disabled for individual directories.

Tomcat

Tomcat is the servlet container that is used in the official Reference Implementation for the Java Servlet and JavaServer Pages technologies. The Java Servlet and JavaServer Pages specifications are developed by Sun under the Java Community Process.
Tomcat is developed in an open and participatory environment and released under the Apache Software License. Tomcat is intended to be a collaboration of the best-of-breed developers from around the world.

Microsoft Application Centre

Microsoft Application Center 2000 empowers developers and Web site administrators to deploy applications quickly and easily while minimizing the in-depth application knowledge requirements. This in turn reduces the complexity and cost of operating a scalable, highly-available application.
